How to Prevent Frozen Pipes This Winter in Ireland

Every winter, Irish plumbers deal with a surge of emergency calls from homeowners with frozen or burst pipes. Why Do Pipes Freeze in Irish Homes?

2. Insulate your attic hatch. A surprising amount of heat escapes through the attic hatch. A draught excluder strip and a piece of rigid insulation board on top of the hatch can make a significant difference.
3. Keep your heating ticking over. When temperatures are forecast to drop below zero, set your thermostat to at least 12-14°C overnight. The cost of running your heating at a low level is far less than repairing burst pipe damage.
4. Know where your stopcock is. In an emergency, you need to turn off the water supply quickly. Your main stopcock is usually under the kitchen sink or where the mains pipe enters the house. Test it now to make sure it turns freely.
5. Open attic hatches slightly during cold snaps. This allows warm air from the house to circulate in the attic, keeping temperatures above freezing. It is not ideal for energy efficiency, but it can prevent a disaster.
6. Fix dripping taps and running toilets. Moving water is less likely to freeze, but a dripping tap in an unheated space can create an ice buildup that blocks the pipe. Get leaks repaired before winter arrives.
7. If you are going away, drain the system. If you are leaving your home unoccupied for more than a couple of days during winter, consider turning off the water at the stopcock and draining the cold water tank and pipes. Alternatively, leave the heating on a timer.

What to Do If a Pipe Freezes

If you turn on a tap and nothing comes out during a cold spell, you likely have a frozen pipe. Here is what to do:

• Turn off the water supply at the main stopcock immediately. If the pipe has already cracked, this will limit the flooding once it thaws.
• Try to thaw the pipe gently. Use a hairdryer, hot water bottle, or warm towels wrapped around the pipe. Start from the tap end and work backwards. Never use a blowtorch or open flame.
• Check for cracks or splits. Once the pipe thaws, inspect it carefully. Even a hairline crack can cause significant water damage.
