Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are becoming increasingly common on Irish roads. While they require less maintenance than traditional petrol or diesel cars, they are not maintenance-free. Understanding what servicing an EV or hybrid needs — and what it does not — will help you keep your vehicle running reliably and protect your investment.
What You Can Skip
Compared to a conventional car, pure electric vehicles eliminate several common maintenance items entirely:
- No oil changes — electric motors do not use engine oil. This alone saves a significant amount on annual servicing costs.
- No timing belt or chain — EVs have a single-speed reduction gear instead of a multi-speed gearbox with belts.
- No exhaust system — no catalytic converters, DPFs or mufflers to rust or clog.
- No clutch or traditional gearbox — one less set of components to wear out.
- Less frequent brake pad replacement — regenerative braking in EVs means the friction brakes are used far less, so pads can last two to three times longer.
Hybrids still have an internal combustion engine, so they require most of the standard maintenance items (oil changes, filters, etc.) alongside the electric drivetrain components.
What EVs and Hybrids Still Need
Despite having fewer moving parts, there are several maintenance items that still apply to electric and hybrid vehicles:
- Tyres — EVs are typically heavier than equivalent petrol cars due to the battery, and they deliver instant torque. This means tyres can wear faster, particularly on the driven axle. Regular tyre rotation and alignment checks are important. Many EVs also require specific low-rolling-resistance tyres.
- Brakes — while pads last longer, brake discs can actually corrode faster because they are used less frequently (less heat to burn off moisture). An annual brake inspection is still recommended, and some EVs need the brakes exercised periodically if driven mainly in town.
- Cabin air filter — this is the same as any other car and should be replaced every 15,000 to 20,000 km or annually.
- Battery coolant — the high-voltage battery has its own thermal management system. The coolant in this system should be checked and replaced according to the manufacturer's schedule, typically every four to five years.
- 12V battery — even EVs have a standard 12V battery for the vehicle's ancillary systems (lights, infotainment, locking). This degrades over time just like any car battery and typically lasts three to five years.
- Suspension and steering — the extra weight of the battery pack puts more stress on suspension components. Bushings, shock absorbers and ball joints should be inspected regularly.
Battery Health and Degradation
The high-voltage battery is the single most expensive component in an EV. Most manufacturers offer battery warranties of eight years or 160,000 km, guaranteeing at least 70% of original capacity. In practice, modern lithium-ion batteries degrade slowly — most EVs retain 90% or more of their capacity after eight years of normal use.
You can help preserve battery health by avoiding frequent fast charging (which generates more heat), not leaving the battery at 100% state of charge for extended periods, and keeping the vehicle in a moderate temperature environment where possible.
Finding a Qualified EV Mechanic
Working on high-voltage systems (typically 400V or higher) requires specialist training and safety equipment. Not all garages are equipped to work on EVs. Look for mechanics who hold IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) Level 2 or Level 3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle qualifications, or manufacturer-specific EV training. These qualifications ensure the technician can safely isolate and work on high-voltage systems.
Annual servicing for a pure EV in Ireland typically costs between EUR 100 and EUR 200 — significantly less than a comparable diesel or petrol car service. Hybrid servicing costs are closer to conventional cars since they still require engine oil and filter changes.
