What is a Google AI Overview?

By Fionn Murphy · Published 19 Aug 2026 · 7 min read

A Google AI Overview is a written summary that Google generates with AI and places above the normal blue links, answering your question directly instead of making you click through to a page. It draws on several sources at once, names some of them as citations, and appears on roughly 1 in 5 to 1 in 3 searches, though never on every search or every page.

What exactly is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is a block Google shows near the top of a search results page, generated by Google's Gemini models, that reads like a short written answer rather than a list of links. Underneath or beside the summary, Google links out to a handful of the pages it drew from. Google introduced AI Overviews in the United States in May 2024 and rolled them out to Ireland and the rest of the EU through 2025, after working through the additional regulatory checks that apply here.

The summary is generated fresh for each search, using a mix of Google's own index, its Knowledge Graph, and, for some queries, a live check of current top-ranking pages. That means the same question can produce a different AI Overview a week later, and two people typing the same words can sometimes see slightly different answers depending on location and search history.

How is an AI Overview different from a featured snippet?

A featured snippet is one page's own text, quoted directly and marked with a link back to that page. Google is not writing anything new; it is choosing the single best-matching passage from a single source and putting it in a box. You can usually tell which page it came from at a glance, because the wording matches that page exactly.

An AI Overview is different in three ways. First, it is generated text, not a direct quote, so the wording will not match any one source exactly. Second, it can draw on several pages at once and blend facts from more than one, rather than pulling from a single winner. Third, the pages it cites are not always the pages ranking highest in the normal organic results below. A page can sit at position 7 or 8 and still be named as a source in the AI Overview, which is exactly what happened for the Irish agency epresence.ie on this topic. Featured snippets rewarded the single best-matching page. AI Overviews reward the page that states a fact clearly enough to be lifted and blended into a summary.

How is an AI Overview different from Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a separate part of Google Search, not a box within the normal results page. You switch into it deliberately, usually by tapping an "AI Mode" tab, and from there the whole page becomes a conversation: you can ask a follow-up question, and Google keeps the thread going, the way a chat with Claude or ChatGPT would. AI Mode also tends to pull in more sources per answer and supports longer, more exploratory questions such as comparing several products or planning a multi-step task.

An AI Overview, by contrast, sits inside the ordinary search results you get by default. You do not opt into it, and there is no back-and-forth conversation attached to it. Think of an AI Overview as an answer that interrupts a normal search, and AI Mode as a different mode of searching altogether. Both matter for visibility, but the page-level work to be cited in each is close to the same: clear, direct, well-sourced answers.

When does an AI Overview show up in an Irish search?

AI Overviews appear most often on informational searches: "what is", "how to", "why does", and comparison questions. They appear far less often on searches with obvious local intent, such as "plumber near me", where Google still leans on the local pack of map results and reviews instead. A DataForSEO check across sixteen commercial search terms relevant to Irish small businesses found AI Overviews firing on five of them, all synchronous with full citations, up from roughly one in eight a year earlier. For a purely definitional term like "ai overview" itself, Google currently shows the standard result format rather than triggering its own AI Overview, which is one reason a clear explainer page can rank well here without fighting an AI-generated answer for the same space.

Local and small-business searches in Ireland are increasingly showing AI Overviews too, particularly for cost questions ("how much does a website cost in Ireland") and definitional questions ("what is GEO", "what is AI SEO"). If your business sells a service that people research before buying, there is a good chance a customer's very first search already returns an AI-written summary before they see any list of websites.

What does an AI Overview actually cite?

Google's own citations research and independent audits agree on a consistent pattern. AI Overviews cite pages that:

  • State a fact or definition in one or two plain sentences, near the top of the page, without burying it under a long introduction.
  • Use the same words a searcher would use, including the exact phrase being searched.
  • Carry supporting structure: a clear H1 and H2s that match the sub-questions people actually ask, and often FAQ content marked up with schema.
  • Are current. Pages with a visible, truthful "last updated" date are favoured over stale ones on fast-moving topics.
  • Sit on a domain with some track record, even a small one. Authority helps, but it is not the whole story: pages ranking outside the top 10 organically are regularly cited if the answer itself is clean.

This last point matters most for a small Irish business. You do not need to outrank Google's own documentation or Wikipedia to be cited. You need to answer the question more directly and more specifically than they do, for an Irish audience, in fewer words.

What should an Irish small business actually do about this?

Three things, roughly in order of effort:

  1. Write a genuine direct-answer page for the two or three questions your customers ask before they buy. Open with a two- or three-sentence answer, in plain language, before any scene-setting. That block is what an AI Overview or a chat assistant is most likely to lift.
  2. Add FAQ content, marked up with FAQPage schema, that answers the real questions people search for, worded the way people actually type them. Do this on your main service pages, not only on blog posts.
  3. Check where you already stand. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google itself the questions a customer would ask, and note whether your business is named. The FMOps AI visibility check does this for you in a few minutes and shows a real example at example report.

None of this replaces ordinary SEO. A page still needs to be crawlable, fast and indexed. But a page built only to rank in the old ten blue links, with a long preamble before it gets to the point, is exactly the kind of page an AI Overview skips over in favour of one that answers first. This is the core of what AI visibility and SEO work looks like in 2026: the same technical foundations, plus content written to be quoted, not just read.

Do you know if AI tools already mention your business?

Most Irish small businesses have never checked. The free AI visibility check asks the questions your customers would ask and shows you the answer. See a worked example at example report, or read how the AI visibility service works, from €750 a month.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Google AI Overview in simple terms?

It is a short written answer that Google's AI generates and places above the normal search results, summarising information from several sources and linking to some of them, so you can read an answer without clicking through to a website.

Does an AI Overview replace the normal Google search results?

No. The AI Overview sits above the ordinary results. You can scroll past it and see the same list of ranked websites as before, along with maps and other results where relevant.

How is an AI Overview different from a featured snippet?

A featured snippet quotes one page's own text directly. An AI Overview is newly generated text that can blend facts from several pages at once, and it does not always cite the page ranking highest in the normal results.

Is Google AI Mode the same as an AI Overview?

No. AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational way of searching that you switch into deliberately. An AI Overview appears automatically inside a normal search results page, with no back-and-forth conversation attached.

Can a small business get cited in an AI Overview?

Yes. Citation depends more on stating a fact clearly and directly than on ranking first organically. Pages outside the organic top 10 are regularly cited when the answer itself is clean and specific.

How do I check if AI Overviews or AI assistants mention my business?

Search the questions your customers would ask and read the AI Overview if one appears, then ask the same questions to ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. The free FMOps AI visibility check runs this for you and reports what it finds.
