What is AI search visibility (GEO)? A plain guide for Irish small businesses
AI search visibility is how often, and how well, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews mention your business when someone asks them a question you could answer. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of improving that visibility.
If a customer in Waterford asks ChatGPT "who is a good physio near me?" and your clinic is not in the answer, you were invisible for that search. This guide explains how the AI tools choose which businesses to name, how that differs from ordinary SEO, how you measure it, and what it costs to improve. How do ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI pick local businesses?
None of these tools has a private list of "approved" businesses. They all build an answer from what they can read on the open web at the moment you ask. The details differ by tool, but the pattern is the same.
- ChatGPT and Claude run a live web search when the question needs current or local facts, read the top results, and then write an answer. They lean on pages that state clearly what a business does, where it is, and who it serves. Reviews and directory listings count because they are consistent, structured evidence.
- Perplexity always searches first and shows numbered citations. If your page is not one of the pages it reads, you cannot appear.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use what Google calls a "query fan-out": the system issues several related searches and combines the results. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI features beyond being indexable and useful. Google's own advice for performing well in AI search is to publish clear, original, people-first content and keep your technical setup clean.
For local questions, the AI tools also lean on Google Business Profile data. Google's own local ranking guidance names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. A complete profile with recent reviews feeds both classic map results and AI answers.
In practice, an AI assistant names a small business when four things line up:
- The business has a page that answers the exact question in plain words (service, area, price range, who it suits).
- The same facts appear in the same form on Google Business Profile, directories and review sites.
- Other sites mention the business in a way that confirms those facts.
- The site is fast, crawlable and not blocked to AI crawlers in robots.txt.
How is AI search visibility different from SEO?
SEO gets you a position on a results page. AI search visibility gets you a mention inside a written answer. The work overlaps by about two-thirds, but the goal and the measurement change.
| Traditional SEO | AI search visibility (GEO) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the top 10 links | Be named or cited in the answer |
| Unit of success | Keyword position, clicks | Mentions, citations, share of answers |
| Content that wins | Long pages that cover a topic | Direct answers, clear facts, comparisons, FAQs |
| Off-site signals | Backlinks | Consistent mentions, reviews, directories, brand searches |
| Where the reader is | ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Copilot |
You do not need to choose. Good SEO is the base. GEO adds a layer on top: pages built to be quoted, facts that agree everywhere, and a monitoring routine that tells you if it worked.
How is AI search visibility measured?
There is no Search Console for ChatGPT. So you measure it by asking the tools the questions your customers ask, and recording what comes back. A simple monthly method looks like this:
- Prompt set. Write 20–40 questions real customers would type. Mix service and location: "best accountant for a small business in Kilkenny", "who does bathroom renovations in Tramore". Keep the same set month to month.
- Run and screenshot. Ask each prompt in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Save a screenshot of each answer. Screenshots are the proof; AI answers change and you cannot go back later.
- Count. Record whether you were named, where you sat in the list, and which page or profile the tool cited. Do the same for the three competitors you care about.
- Report. Track mentions out of total prompts (your "share of answers"), citation count, and the sources cited. Watch how the numbers move each month.
That is the whole method. Tools exist that automate it, but the manual version is honest and cheap, and it is what FMOps runs for clients.
What does AI search visibility cost in Ireland?
Prices depend on how much content and outreach the plan includes, and how many prompts are monitored.
- DIY: your time plus a €0–100/month tools budget. Works if you can write and will stick to a monthly routine.
- FMOps: retainers from €750/month. That covers a prompt set, monthly screenshots and citation counts, fixes to your site and profiles, and new answer-style pages each month. There is a free AI visibility check before you commit to anything.
- Agencies: typically €1,500–5,000/month, often bundled with SEO and paid ads. Better suited to companies with several locations or a national market.
If you are pricing this alongside other work, our guide to business automation costs in Ireland uses the same plain-numbers approach.
How long does it take to see results?
Faster than classic SEO, because the AI tools re-read the web on each query rather than waiting for a ranking to settle. A typical timeline for a small business that starts from a clean but quiet site:
- Weeks 1–2: baseline prompt run, fix Google Business Profile, directory facts, robots.txt and page titles.
- Weeks 3–8: publish direct-answer pages and FAQs. First mentions usually appear here, often in Perplexity or Google AI Mode first.
- Months 3–6: steady coverage across the tools for the prompts that matter, as reviews and third-party mentions build.
Sectors with few competitors move faster. Crowded categories (solicitors, dentists, estate agents in a city) take longer and need more third-party mentions.
Who does AI search visibility suit?
It suits any business where a customer might ask an assistant for a recommendation before they buy: trades, clinics, professional services, hospitality, and B2B firms with a clear niche. It is most valuable when one new customer is worth several hundred euro or more, because a single extra enquiry a month covers the retainer.
It suits you less if you sell only through marketplaces, or if your website is more than a few years old and cannot be edited. In that case fix the site first. Our guide to tools for Irish sole traders covers the cheap basics that need to be in place before any visibility work will stick.

Frequently asked questions
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It is the work of making a business more likely to be named and cited by AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
Is AI search visibility the same as SEO?
No. SEO aims for a position on a results page. AI search visibility aims for a mention inside a written AI answer. Good SEO is the base, and GEO adds answer-style pages, consistent facts across the web, and monthly monitoring by prompt.
Can I check my AI search visibility for free?
Yes. Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity 10 to 20 questions your customers would ask and note whether you appear. FMOps also offers a free AI visibility check at fmops.ie/ai-check that does this for you.
How much does AI search visibility cost in Ireland?
FMOps retainers start at €750 per month and include a prompt set, monthly screenshots and citation counts, and new content. Agencies usually charge €1,500 to €5,000 per month, often bundled with SEO.
How long before an AI assistant mentions my business?
First mentions usually appear within 6 to 12 weeks for a small business with a working website. Steady coverage across the main tools takes 3 to 6 months, longer in crowded categories.
Do I need a new website to be visible in AI search?
Not always. If your site is fast, editable and indexable, you can add answer-style pages to it. If it cannot be edited or is blocked to crawlers, a simple new site is usually the cheaper fix.
